September 8th, 2009 Kevin No comments

I presented my “Introduction to Cloud computing” presentation to some people at our Wellington office today, Both presentations where well attended and had some great questions asked. I will be posting the presentation on my blog soon.

The flight down was interesting 1st out i was delayed by 1 our due to fog at Auckland airport. the Flight down was excellent with a good view of New Zealand, what a great place I live. Snow on the mounts and great rivers flowing into the sea.

On the was into Wellington I spotted two of the interisland ferries, looked a bit rough down there glad i was not on the ferry :)

The return flight to Auckland was on time and excellent as usual thanks Air New Zealand Oh and I still love the safety instructions by the painted crew sure makes me watch the safety video

Also check out the Bloopers from the Safety video so so funny

Defragging Indexes for Beginners
Indexes over time become fragmented and as a result don’t work quite as well as they should.  This short talk will show you how an index can become fragmented and will also show you the steps to fix index fragmentations.

Effective Indexes for Beginners
From SQL Server 2005 onwards, we have been able to use a DMV to identify which of our indexes are effective and which of our indexes can be disabled.  This short talk will show you how and why you should be checking the effectiveness of your indexes.

Barcamp Auckland 3 – Barcamp Auckland 3

June 24th, 2009 Kevin 1 comment

What? BCA3 is the third Barcamp that will be held in Auckland. Read about past Barcamps that have been held in Auckland. Unlike other Barcamps you may have attended in NZ, BCA is much less restricted with subject matter. Our focus is on the cross-pollination of ideas and knowledge.

Where? BCA3 will be held at the same venue as the previous two Barcamps held in Auckland; Botany Downs Secondary College. The venue has been found to be a great space for collaboration and the Barcamp ideologies seem to be echoed by the architecture of the buildings.

When? BCA3 will be held on the 11th of July; sessions will commence at 9am however registration must be completed by 8:20am. The day will run until about 5:30pm.

Who? Barcamp is for anyone and everyone to attend. You make the event because you give the presentations and you hold the discussions. Everyone is a participant at Barcamps. Whether you are a high-school student, have a Phd or are a respected “celebrity” in your field of expertise, you have something to contribute; whether you are a designer, animator, social media strategist, web or desktop application developer, politician, technologist, blogger or a mum who just loves gadgets; you are welcome!

How much? Nothing. Barcamp has always been, and will always be free!

AucklandSQL User Group – June meeting

Being the DBA

The involuntary DBA role

The previous DBA left and your boss decided you should cover the position. But where do you start? Which questions should you ask? What should you do first?  You don’t even know what it is you don’t know. We’ll discuss maintenance, disaster recovery, storage, performance, and monitoring. We’ll touch on many other areas as well so you’ll at least have heard a bit about them and you’ll know to learn more and ask questions on them.

Keeping the business running- Backup & Restore

The Backup and Restore commands are the most important SQL Server commands in a Database Administrators arsenal.  But there is more to Backup & Restore than just recovery from a system failure or user error. This session will cover some of the features and option available for not just disaster recovery, but day to day operations.

DBA 101: Common best Practices (with discussion)

As soon as you get into the office in the morning, before you’ve even had your first coffee, you should be thinking about on your routine.  This session cover best practices for what DBAs need to do on a day-to-day basis. This is the kind of information you won’t find in most books. It is the kind of information that can only be learned on the job.
