So what is skype ?
Skype is an internet phone company, basically when you make a phone call your voice goes over the internet to the country you are calling then rings the normal phone you are calling just like any other phone call but heaps cheaper then Telecom.
What do I need to use skype ?
- You need a computer connected to the internet on Broadband (See Techie Kev’s guide to Broadband)
- Skype software and account (See www.skype.com)
- Head phone and mic connected to your PC or get a skype phone from Trademe www.trademe.co.nz just search for skype
That’s all you need to start saving
Techie Kev’s Guide to Broadband Internet
So you have dialup internet and you want faster browsing and downloading?
There are a number of companies that will provide faster then dialup internet speed. Depending upon your politics regarding Telecom you can make a choice from any of the main providers I have listed, however if you also want the benefit of an extra phone line then your only choice at the moment is Woosh.
I have used both Xtra and Orcon and I would recommend Orcon every time.

The internet is going to change very quickly over the next 3 – 6 months with all the main providers offering phone lines, internet TV etc.. Now that Telecom has been unbundled New Zealand will at last join the rest of the world in terms of internet connectivity.
A word of warning about Woosh, while this is the only company currently offering an extra phone line they are using very out dated technology and will not be able to keep up with the others over the next 3 – 6 months, so I would not recommend Woosh unless you must have an extra phone line now
>So what can I do with Broadband that I can not do with dialup?
- Ask Dave Barr what can be done.
- Google earth
- Fast Emails and www
- Faster Dave Emails J
- Always on
- Free up your phone line for voice calls
- No more waiting
- Very cheap phone calls (see my guide)
- And much much more……
